About Dr. Mooney
Dr. James Henry Mooney, MD is a neurosurgeon specializing in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery. He joined VCU Health in 2025 after completing fellowship training in minimally invasive and complex spine deformity surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is dedicated to building a world-class spine program that integrates cutting-edge surgical innovation with compassionate, patient-centered care, treating a broad spectrum of conditions including scoliosis, kyphosis, spinal stenosis, herniated discs, spinal tumors, and traumatic injuries, with expertise in advanced minimally invasive techniques, robotic-assisted surgery, and image-guided navigation.
Dr. Mooney earned his undergraduate degree in neuroscience from Amherst College, where he graduated with honors and was a two-time captain and All-Region standout on a top 10 nationally ranked NCAA men’s soccer team, before receiving his medical degree with honors from the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, completing neurosurgical residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and fellowship training at UPMC. An active researcher and educator, he has authored over 60 peer-reviewed manuscripts and six textbook chapters, presents regularly at national and international meetings, and focuses his research on improving spine surgery outcomes through robotics, navigation, advanced imaging, and artificial intelligence. His work has been recognized with national awards including the Charles Kuntz Scholar Award, the McCravey Clinical Science Award, and the Stewart B. Dunsker Award, and he serves as a reviewer for leading spine journals. Committed to collaboration and training the next generation of neurosurgeons, Dr. Mooney emphasizes multidisciplinary teamwork to achieve the safest care and best outcomes for patients. Outside of the hospital he enjoys time with his wife and daughter, endurance sports, outdoor activities, and playing the piano.
